Asbestos is a natural mineral that was used extensively in the construction of residential homes prior to the 1990s.  Asbestos has been found to include a carcinogen that has been linked to mesothelioma (a rare and aggressive cancer), lung disease, and other cancers.

Industry and construction sectors have used asbestos in products like:

• industrial furnaces and heating systems
• building insulation
• floor and ceiling tiles
• house siding

Before starting any major renovation on homes built prior to 1990, asbestos testing should be undertaken to ensure any demolition is being done in a safe manner.
